The FFU 1 course is divided into the areas of fundamentals, fields of action and selected aspects of strategic management in family businesses. The aim is to impart basic competences for the conceptual and in-depth examination of issues relating to the strategic management of family businesses. Therefor, an overview of theoretical foundations is provided, particularly from the perspective of socio-emotional wealth theory and stewardship theory. In addition, the content relates to fields of action in strategic management such as strategic goals, processes and types of strategy in family businesses.
The course covers other selected aspects of strategic change in family businesses. In each case, an insight into specific problems is provided in order to achieve a systematic examination of relevant specialist topics. A combination of classic lecture presentations (in conjunction with self-study of the specified literature), self-study as well as in-depth discussion events enables the teaching of professional competence as well as methodological and social competence. A practical lecture and a case study reinforce the application orientation of this course.

The course deals with selected issues of leadership in family businesses and builds on the course FFU 1. In the courses, individual theories and related topics and questions on family business management are examined in greater depth. In particular, theories that contribute to dealing with phenomena such as family governance mechanisms, transfer of leadership to successors, human resource management or questions of corporate identity and corporate culture are the focus of consideration.
Students will gain an insight into the relevant English-language literature. Each topic will be deepened by current examples and discussed on the basis of specific questions from family business practice.
The course is offered in the Summer semester. Please refer to the electronic course catalogue (eKVV) for lecture times and event information for the Summer semester.

Empirical research is a central part of gaining knowledge in the field of management. In the Master's thesis, students are also faced with the challenge of addressing a research question through empirical study. This Master's thesis has to meet a research standard that can follow either a quantitative or a qualitative orientation. Qualitative research studies are based in particular on interviews, documents and observations, which are analysed and interpreted with regard to the research question. The course therefore aims to provide an insight into the basics of qualitative research.
The course is intended to provide an introduction to forms and methods of scientific work. Students who are interested in qualitative methods and plan to conduct an empirical study as part of their Master's thesis will therefore be trained in topics such as the theory of science, data collection and data analysis. In a practical part, the students get to know software programmes for data analysis and use them in research projects. At the end of the course, the students are able to understand the entire research process from the research question and theoretical approval to data collection and data analysis. In this way, they also develop critical reading skills with regard to scientific texts.
